What Types of Fasteners Should Be Used With Pressure-Treated Wood?

A pole barn is a cost-effective way to increase storage space on a farm or to store vehicles. Using the right materials can extend the life of the building. This includes using pressure-treated wood and appropriate fasteners, connectors, and panels.

Wood-preserving companies usually contract with an independent inspection agency accredited by the American Lumber Standard Committee to monitor their production procedures. The agencies make sure the companies are meeting the standards set by the American Wood Protection Association. They take sample borings and check for preservative retention and penetration.

Galvanized hardware that is recommended for use with CCA-treated wood may be unsuitable for use with water-borne preservatives. Products such as ACQ and CA have high concentrations of copper that can conduct electricity and cause corrosion.

Most component manufacturers recommend that panels and flashing not be allowed to come into contact with pressure-treated wood. A barrier material should be used to stop electrical current between the wood and metal components. Water should not be allowed to drain off treated wood onto panels or flashing.

Preservative and hardware manufacturers both recommend using stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners that meet ASTM A 153 and connectors that meet Class G185 sheet of ASTM A 653 or better with treated wood. 300 Series stainless steel hardware or better is recommended in permanent wood foundations or in cases where salt spray is present. Aluminum should not be used with copper-based treated wood.

If the treated lumber has a high retention level or the environment is corrosive, fasteners and hardware may need to be upgraded. Most manufacturers recommend using a minimum of hot-dip galvanized or Type 304 stainless steel with pressure-treated wood. The International Building Code and International Residential Code recommend using hot-dipped galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze, or copper fasteners with preservative-treated wood.
