Roof Design Options for Your Pole Barn

One of the most important design elements you need to choose for your pole barn is the roof. Pole barns can be built with a variety of roof designs to match your needs and style preferences.

A shed roof is the simplest design. It is a single plane roof that is generally used for small barns and buildings with limited uses. A shed roof is the easiest to construct since it only requires that the front wall be higher than the rear.

The most common roof design for pole barns is the traditional gable roof, which has two sides with an equal pitch. Common slopes range from 2/12 to 8/12. A steep gable roof can easily shed snow. Gable roofs are built on pole barns that are used as barns, garages, shops, and even homes. This is the most economical roofing choice.

The monitor roof is based on the gable roof design. A monitor roof has a high section in the center so that tall objects can be stored there. This is an excellent choice for a horse barn or a building used to store a tall vehicle, such as an RV. It also allows for doors on either end of the building so that vehicles can be driven in one side and out the other. A pole barn with a monitor roof can have a clearspan or interior poles. A center loft can be added. A monitor roof design is frequently used in horse barns because it works well with stall kits.

Gambrel roofs are less commonly used in pole barns. This design has a significantly higher center section and is a little more expensive than other types of roofs. A gambrel roof provides additional storage space on the upper floor of the building. It is more difficult to construct than other types of roofs but can provide a significant amount of extra space. A gambrel roof can add character, especially when combined with a cupola or widow’s peak.

The Pole Barn Company can design a custom pole barn to meet your needs. We can create plans to incorporate any of these roof styles. Contact us today to start designing your new pole barn.
