How to Prevent Water Damage in Your Pole Barn

Spring and summer bring the threat of heavy rain, and with that comes the risk of water damage to buildings. If you have a pole barn or are thinking about building one, you need to take some steps to protect it from damage caused by water.

A pole barn can be flooded if it is located in an area with poor drainage. It is generally not a good idea to build a pole barn at the bottom of a hill because water will inevitably run down in a storm and can cause flooding. If you have no choice but to set up your pole barn at the base of a hill, make sure that the area is designed with good drainage. Grading away from the building should be at least 3 to 5 percent.

Wood is susceptible to damage from moisture. Metal is much more resistant to damage from heavy rains. If you live in an area that frequently experiences heavy rainstorms, it might be best to chose metal siding for your pole barn.

Prepare for stormy weather by cleaning your pole barn’s gutters. Gutters that are clogged with leaves and debris can allow water to back up and cause damage to the roof and foundation of your post frame building. You should have your gutters cleaned twice a year. Another option is to install gutter guards. They will make it easier to keep your gutters clean and dramatically reduce the amount of maintenance required.

Heavy snow that is allowed to accumulate on your pole barn’s roof in the winter can also cause damage. Snow will inevitably melt. If your gutters are not clean, water can back up and damage your roof. Clogged gutters can also lead to ice dams, which form when snow on the roof melts and then refreezes. The best way to prevent water damage to your pole barn in the winter is to remove snow from the roof as soon as possible using a roof rake.
