How to Install Windows in Your Pole Barn

A pole barn is a versatile type of building that can be used to store equipment, horses, hay, and animal feed. A pole barn can also be used as a home, garage, or workshop. If you are planning to build a pole barn on your property, you will want to install some windows to provide natural light and ventilation.

You should not use reclaimed windows for your pole barn because they may be stressed or damaged. It is best to use new windows. Avoid double-glazed windows because they may be too heavy.

Choose a location for your window where you can attach it to a horizontal member. Be sure that there is nothing in the way that could prevent the window from opening.

Build a frame that is the same size as the window. Use wood that is at least one inch thick and has been treated with a waterproofing agent. The frame will project from both sides of the wall. Flanges will hold it in the correct position.

Hold the frame up to the wall where you want to install it and trace around the outside. Drill holes in the corners and cut along the lines with a jigsaw. Use coarse sandpaper to sand the edges smooth.

Insert the window frame into the opening and nail it to the horizontal members. Apply mastic around the frame on the inside and outside against the siding. Fit the wooden flanges on both sides of the frame and nail them to the frame and siding to make the frame secure and keep water out.

Install the window in the frame and use the connection points in the window to insert screws. Be sure the screws will not prevent the window from opening. Make sure the window will open inwardly. Apply mastic around the window to keep water out. Allow it to set and then check to make sure the window opens properly.
