How to Extend the Life of Your Pole Barn

Wood is an extremely durable building material that can last for generations if steps are taken to protect it. A pole barn is susceptible to rot that can be caused by moisture in soil. If you are planning to build a pole barn on your property, there are some simple measures you can take during the construction process to protect your posts from moisture that could cause them to rot.

Perma-Columns are five-foot-long pre-cast concrete piers with steel brackets on top that bolt to wooden posts. The piers are placed into four-foot-deep holes, which make the posts sit a foot above the ground. This minimizes contact between the poles and the soil and reduces the need to treat the wood to protect it from moisture. Using Perma-Columns can increase the cost to build a pole barn by 4 to 10 percent, but many building owners consider them a worthwhile investment because they can significantly extend the life of a pole barn.

Post Protectors can also prevent contact between wooden poles and the soil. A five-foot HDPE sleeve is placed over the bottoms of the wood poles before they are placed into four-foot-deep holes. The sleeves are made from a material similar to what is used to line landfills. They are extremely durable and can last up to 400 years. The sleeves can also prevent post-treatment chemicals in the wood from leeching into the soil.

If you are planning to build a pole barn, you need to consider the effect that moisture in the environment could have on the wood. Taking simple steps to protect the poles that support your building can extend the life of your pole barn by many years, making these measures sound investments.
