How to Create Proper Drainage for Your Pole Barn

If you are going to build a pole barn on your property for storage or to shelter animals, it is essential to have proper drainage to prevent flooding that could damage the building or the things you store inside it.

You need to consider two types of drainage. Subsurface drainage uses an underground network of pipes to carry water to a disposal point, such as a storm sewer. Surface drainage uses the grading of the land in a way that diverts rain and other water at the surface into a neutral drainage pattern. It is important to use both types of drainage to improve the longevity of your pole barn.

You should have proper drainage around the perimeter of the building to avoid water runoff into the building around the perimeter and at the doors. The driveway and other adjacent elevations should allow for proper drainage. Think about where the water will flow and make sure there is enough capacity.

One way to do this is to install corrugated drain tile to improve subsurface drainage. It is easier to install corrugated drain tile before preparing the site for construction of the pole barn than to do it later.

You can also ensure good drainage by installing heavy-duty gutters and downspouts. They will improve the building’s longevity and reduce the risk of condensation. You can connect the downspouts to a tile system to redirect water and keep runoff away from the building.

Installing a layer of coarse stone over the soil base can reduce capillary action and help water drain away from the building. If water cannot drain away, capillary action can create moisture problems inside the pole barn.
