Don’t Cut Corners in These Areas When Building a Pole Barn

Many people cut corners when building a pole barn in an attempt to save money, but that can wind up costing more in the long run.

One of the most common areas where people try to save money is with windows and doors. These are two of the most important components of a pole barn and are not an area where you should cut corners with cheaper products.

Moisture can soften and decay building materials and undermine both the inside and outside of the building. Overhangs can keep moisture out of your pole barn and protect the walls and foundation. They also allow for the construction of vented eaves and flow-through vents to ventilate humidity away.

It is important to prepare a site correctly before building a pole barn. Many people do not use enough gravel as a solid base, which allows moisture to seep into the building and cause damage. The problem can be worsened if the dirt around the pole barn is not appropriately filled and sloped away from the building. This allows the ground to settle toward the foundation and allows moisture to pool against the foundation.

A poorly engineered foundation can cause excessive cracks in the concrete floor. When the foundation shifts, it can stress and impact interior finishes. It can also cause windows to stick as the foundation twists the frames out of alignment.

Cutting corners may seem like a way to save money when building a pole barn, but it can actually lead to additional costs and headaches later on. It is better to invest the money to buy quality materials and do the job right so you can prevent problems and enjoy your pole barn for many years.
