Does My Pole Barn Need Gutters?

Since many people use pole barns as storage buildings, they like to keep it as simple as possible. While there are many accessories available to customize a post frame building, unless it is absolutely necessary most owners will skip on the bells and whistles. However, depending on where you live, installing rain gutters on your pole barn building may be a wise decision.

With high quality rain gutters professionally installed on your pole barn, you extend the life of your structure by diverting rain water and melting snow away from the building. Without gutters, your building is at risk for complications that arise from water. This can include leaks in the roof and ceiling, worn and warped siding, water damage to the foundation of the structure and possible flooding.

If you lie in an area that is relatively dry year round and doesn't get much rainfall then gutters may not be a high priority. But if you live where rainfall is consistent and snow accumulates during the winter, then it is recommended that you install a gutter system on your pole barn.

Heavy rain and melting snow will create problems for any structure and a pole barn is no exception. If you keep vehicles, equipment, livestock, materials and perishable foods in your post frame building then it is crucial you do what you can to keep water from leaking in. Rain gutters will effectively capture rain water and melting snow in the gutter channel and divert it away from the structure by way of the downspouts.

Depending on the size of your pole barn, the cost for installing gutters can be relatively cheap and in the long run it is well worth the cost. If you have experience working on roofs this is a project you may be able to complete yourself but in most cases it is recommended that you contract with a professional gutter installer who will ensure the job is done properly.
