How to Protect Your Pole Barn from Flooding

Heavy rain and flooding can occur nearly anywhere, even in places that typically have very little rainfall and are not located near a body of water. Any building is potentially at risk for flooding. If you want to build a pole barn on your property, you should take some practical steps to do your best to protect it from flood damage.

Where to Build Your Pole Barn

The first thing to do is to choose the right location to build your pole barn. Do not construct it near a river, lake, or pond or at the bottom of a hill where water comes running down when it rains. If possible, choose a location where water can naturally drain away from the building. If you do not have such a location on your property, you may need to make some modifications to the site before you begin building to ensure that it will have proper drainage. This will raise the overall construction cost, but it is an important step that can protect your pole barn from ruin if your area gets heavy rain in the future.

Gutters Can Protect Your Pole Barn

If your area tends to get significant rainfall, at least at certain times of the year, or if you get a lot of snow in the winter that then melts in the spring, you should install gutters on your pole barn. They will direct water to the downspouts where it can be carried safely away from your pole barn. Gutters will prevent costly damage to the roof, siding, foundation, and landscaping around the building. Be sure to clean your gutters regularly to remove leaves and anything else that is clogging them so water can drain easily.

Get Flood Insurance

You should insure your pole barn so you will be covered in case there is severe flooding in your area and your pole barn is damaged or destroyed. Note that a standard homeowners insurance policy does not cover flood damage. You need to take out a separate policy that specifically covers damage related to floods. If you don’t and your pole barn gets flooded, you will be responsible for all of the costs to repair or rebuild it.

Where to Order a Pole Barn Kit

A pole barn is an excellent place to store vehicles and equipment for your farm or to serve as a horse barn or riding arena. Pole barns can even be used as homes and businesses. No matter how you want to use your pole barn, you can find a pole barn kit with the right size and features from The Pole Barn Company.
