How to Prepare Your Lot For a Pole Barn Building

Proper site preparation is important before the construction of a pole barn building starts. Sure, it costs a little upfront to do it right, but when done properly it will save you lots of money and many headaches in the future. Not only that, your pole barn building will last longer and require less maintenance if first the lot is prepared right.

There are steps similar to that of building a house or other structure that should be followed even though it’s just a pole barn building. First, and ALWAYS, start by seeking approval for your lot and pole barn building by obtaining the proper permits from the jurisdiction where you live. Know your property codes, zoning requirements, and inspection processes, if required. Once that is determined, it’s time to dig!

Basic steps to prepare a lot for a pole barn building:

  1. Determine the size of the lot your need to clear and map out it’s location with stakes and boundary rope. Ideally a flat, well-draining area will help minimize problems later. Also, the perfect location should consider access and use for your pole barn building. Finally, determine if there will be a future expansion.
  2. Be sure to leave enough space around your planned building area to allow for clear access on all sides.
  3. Establish the grade and elevation needed to allow for adequate drainage away from your pole barn building lot.
  4. You are ready to excavate. Remove all sod, soil and other natural debris. Excavate to make the pole barn lot smooth, removing high spots and filling low ones.
  5. It is recommended at this time that you add ponds or other swales, if needed.
  6. If needed add fill material such as gravel, sand, or coarse stone over the soil base to reduces capillary action and better prepare the lot to drain water away from the pole barn.
  7. You should now be ready to build. But, if you are not sure, ask advice from a building construction professional. They may charge a small fee to evaluate your lot, but it is worth it to have a professional opinion.
