How to Build a Pole Barn on an Uneven Lot

When building a pole barn, it is easiest to construct the building on a level piece of land. However, in many cases the ground slopes and there is not a level piece available that is large enough for the building. In that case, you may need to make some modifications to the site and to your construction methods to take the slope of the land into consideration and build a sturdy pole barn.

How to Make the Building Site Level

One option you have is to fill the area with soil and compact it to make the building site flatter. In most cases where drainage is not a major issue, it is fine if the floor of the pole barn is less than an inch off-level.

Another option is to build the barn on the land as it currently is and then fill in and level it off later. You can install a concrete slab and enclose the bays after you have put the poles in place and added the roof to the pole barn.

If you decide to move earth and one end of the building site is below grade, you can contour the ground outside the drip line and put drainage swales around the pole barn to direct water away from it. A better option is to make it so the floor is at or above grade at the higher end and to install swales at the high end.

Modifying Your Building Plans

If the site where you are going to build your pole barn is not completely level, you can make some adjustments to the building process. Figure out how much the site is off level and buy poles that are that much longer. Put them in the ground to the depth specified by your building plans, secure collar beams, and then cut off the tops of the poles. You would have to do this even if you built on a completely flat site because it is difficult to get all of the poles buried to the exact same depth.
