Home Sweet Pole Barn Home

"A Very Special House in the Country"

Did you see today’s rerun episode of Fixer Upper, where the Meek family converted a 1000-square-foot "barndominium" (barn + upstairs apartment) into a beautiful 2700-square-foot home? Joanna Gaines said, “It’s my favorite fixer upper by far!” It was indeed a beautifully finished old barn-style home. See it here: http://www.hgtv.com/shows/fixer-upper/fixer-upper-a-very-special-house-in-the-country-pictures

But, because it still had recently housed horses (manure) and hay, it was not an easy task nor was it cheap! The Pole Barn Company suggests that to have a barn as a home, start from scratch…it’s a whole lot easier and must less expensive!

Pole barn homes need everything from insulation to plumbing to foundation. The Meek barn project on HGTV would have been cheaper had they completely started over with a pole barn kit and not tried to save that old barn. In fact, they spent just south of $400,000 to make their barn work as a home. A new pole barn home can be constructed from a kit for much less than half of that amount.

It’s not just the cost that makes the reconstruction of converting an old barn to a home nearly impossible, one must also consider the time it will take to make the project a reality.  This type of project is very time-consuming because everything because a challenge; very few old barns are habitable for many reasons:

·      there is usually no foundation to start with; most barns have dirt floors

·      the existing barn is not structurally sound

·      damage from rodents and insects is excessive

·      permits, inspections and other regulatory compliance is very difficult to obtain

To make a barn a home, a pole barn kit is the perfect solution! It can make your dream a possibility…and for much less than converting an old standing barn.

How to Prepare Your Lot For a Pole Barn Building

There are steps similar to that of building a house or other structure that should be followed even though it’s just a pole barn building. Here is what The Pole Barn Company suggests:

Proper site preparation is important before the construction of a pole barn building starts. Sure, it costs a little upfront to do it right, but when done properly it will save you lots of money and many headaches in the future. Not only that, your pole barn building will last longer and require less maintenance if first the lot is prepared right.

There are steps similar to that of building a house or other structure that should be followed even though it’s just a pole barn building. First, and ALWAYS, start by seeking approval for your lot and pole barn building by obtaining the proper permits from the jurisdiction where you live. Know your property codes, zoning requirements, and inspection processes, if required. Once that is determined, it’s time to dig!

Basic steps to prepare a lot for a pole barn building:

  1. Determine the size of the lot your need to clear and map out it’s location with stakes and boundary rope. Ideally a flat, well-draining area will help minimize problems later. Also, the perfect location should consider access and use for your pole barn building. Finally, determine if there will be a future expansion.
  2. Be sure to leave enough space around your planned building area to allow for clear access on all sides.
  3. Establish the grade and elevation needed to allow for adequate drainage away from your pole barn building lot.
  4. You are ready to excavate. Remove all sod, soil and other natural debris. Excavate to make the pole barn lot smooth, removing high spots and filling low ones.
  5. It is recommended at this time that you add ponds or other swales, if needed.
  6. If needed add fill material such as gravel, sand, or coarse stone over the soil base to reduces capillary action and better prepare the lot to drain water away from the pole barn.
  7. You should now be ready to build. But, if you are not sure, ask advice from a building construction professional. They may charge a small fee to evaluate your lot, but it is worth it to have a professional opinion.

At The Pole Barn Company, We Define What A QUALITY Pole Barn Is

“The quality of all the materials exceeded my expectations and this is coming from a building contractor that’s been in the business for 27 years. It's not often that we get top quality materials and excellent service like this, so I want to thank you again.”

Jeff Alston, Alston Construction, Pittsburgh, PA

Quality: it’s something everyone claims because there are not requirements to saying it. At The Pole Barn Company, we feel we DEFINE quality pole barns. How can we say this? Here’s how:

We define quality as what the customer wants and says…and ultimately, by our customers satisfaction. As we debate who does or doesn’t know quality, The Pole Barn Company realizes that the only person who truly matters when it comes to claiming who has the best quality is the customer.

I recently finished putting up my new pole barn, and I can’t believe how nice it looks and how easy it all came together. My building inspector even stated that this was the one of the best
kits he had ever seen. Great product from a very pleased customer.”

–Joseph Pigeon, Newberry, MI.

Our high-end, high quality materials and “select list of options” sets up apart from other pole barn suppliers. The Pole Barn Company knows what our customers need and values from a pole barn kit — like post rot protection, laminated posts and copula options — because we’ve listened. And, we continue to listen. But more importantly, we act on those needs…even if they are special requests that require a unique solution.

“Thanks for all the help getting the door and materials to me.
You guys have great quality materials and drawings.”

—Nick from Hamilton, OH.

Quality customer service and support is what we do best! At The Pole Barn Company, our customer is king. If you know anyone who has bought from us, they’ll tell you that.

“Shawna and Brad were great to work with. Having never built a pole barn before on my own,
I had numerous questions in order to make sure I was doing everything right. T
hese questions were answered very quickly and in a detailed manner.”

—Scott, Junction City, KS

Our business is blessed with quality referrals. You know you’ve satisfied a customer when you get a referral for a new one. Much of our business growth is because a happy customer has referred a friend, family member or co-worker.

“I am passing along your contact info to my cousin  who is looking to build a garage in
Bay City, MI.  I told him you’re the guys.”

—Mark Peterson, Bay City, MI

The Pole Barn Company provides quality solutions at the lowest possible price. We understand that for some people, quality might be a secondary concern to getting a good deal that fits their budget. Sure, we’re not the cheapest or best deal. But, we do have the best quality for a most competitive price. Don’t sacrifice a couple hundred dollars for inferior construction materials and a total lack of quality. At least, let us quote your pole barn project: http://www.thepolebarncompany.com/quote/index.php?package=standard&zip= or call us at 844-213-0034, 8:00am to 6:00pm Eastern time.
